Health
Lok Kalyan Sansthan plays a key role in developing ways to enable poor communities in rural area to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to protect and promote good health. It has been a pioneer of community health efforts in Western Rajasthan as it helped rebuild the health infrastructure and reactivated primary healthcare facilities in operational area. A particular focus is on improving the health status of vulnerable groups – especially women of childbearing age and children under five – who live in geographically remote areas.
The organisation works to strengthen healthcare systems by building the skills of government and primary level healthcare professionals. It also contributes to health sector reforms, improvement of environmental and household health through provision of water, sanitation and hygiene promotion and awareness raising activities, improvement of maternal and child health, improvement of nutritional status and programmes to combat infectious diseases.
Activities under this programme are:
Immunisation
In Barmer district considerable number of infant mortality rate is recorded due to lack of ANC-PNC care. An attempt has been made to address the problem of high mortality rate of infants and mothers with the help of TBAs. The project has provision to provide for regular TBAs’ training on this issue. Their responsibility is not merely to conduct safe deliveries but also to ensure proper vaccination of the mother and the child. The children are looked after as they come in the womb of the mothers. Immunisation of both mothers and children is being taken care of by the LKS and health check up is done.
Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) Activation
Regular visit and meetings with ICDS staff by the organisation staff, including health workers and NFE teachers
Monitoring of ICDS facilities
Provision of necessary and important information to the ICDS staff and beneficiaries
Advocacy for ICDS staff and raising demand for staff where it is not available
Proper monitoring to open the ICDS on time
At present nine ICDS villages are being covered under the activity.
Birth Registration
Registration of the birth with the Government helps a child in his life ahead. Keeping this in mind LKS is spreading awareness about the benefits of the registration of birth and death and facilitates the reach of the community to the officer concerned for such registrations. Newly born are identified and their birth is reported to the Gram Sevak to register the birth of the child.
TBA Certification, Identification and Training
Certificates are given to all the TBAs in the area so that all the pregnant women take the benefit of Janani Suraksha Yojana. Orientation programmes are conducted to on problems of TBAs as well as health and to obtain their solution. Discussions regarding health as a fundamental right, safe and secure delivery of the child, immunisation and birth registration are done. TBAs’ forum has been formed at the block level.
Other activities include capacity building of the staff, training on fundamental right to health, workshops of village health committees and eligible couple survey.
Health camps and eye camps are being organised frequently to provide health facilities to the disadvantaged.
