Children’s of Jogi Community Admitted to School
In Laladiyon Ki Daandi village, Pokhran, Jaisalmer district, reside 13 families of Jogi community, who engage themselves in breaking kakri and begging to earn a living. These families have 20 to 22 children in school going age of 6 to 14 years. Due to lack of education and social customs prevalent in the Jogi community, parents of these children do not send them to schools, and involve these children in kakri breaking along with them.
When during a visit to the village, the organisation’s workers found this they organised a meeting in their locality and appealed to the people of the Jogi community to send their children to school. At this, the people said that when they never studied what would their kids do by studying, and that would also affect their business. The social workers explained to the people and their community leader Babunath Somnath that the time ahead is of education and if they did not educate their children they would ruin their lives and that a human without education was similar to an animal. The workers explained the families that education would help their children to have bright future and to assimilate in mainstream.
After a lot of persuasion and explanation, the people of Jogi community agreed to enrol their children into schools. In the current session around 20 boys and girls of the community were attending school. Their retention was also satisfactory.
It is said that one who tries never fails. The efforts of the workers have started showing results, and children who were deprived of education started studying and their lives were filled with happiness.
